I had a weird childhood. At least *I* think it was weird. Some others have commented on how odd it must have been - so I'm going with it. Of the many odd things that I'll always remember: Our Traditional Christmas Lunch.
Life in the small town I grew up in wasn't fun - especially in the dead of winter. I didn't see anything BUT a White Christmas when I was a kid. I never understood that whole, "I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas" thing. Duh, it ALWAYS snows at Christmas. So what do you do for lunch on a cold - bitterly cold - Christmas Day to make sure you're three kids have fun, and a good laugh at the same time? You roll out the grill and cook burgers!
Every year for Christmas Lunch we had hamburgers - fresh off the grill. Often someone had to shovel snow off of the back patio so there was a place for the grill. I even remember a year when we turned the heater on in the garage (yes, we had a separate heater in the garage from the rest of the house) and only opening the patio door. We grilled in the garage that year. It was odd, but fun - and my sisters and I didn't particularly enjoy turkey or the trimmings.
The first year I lived in Florida my dad and I had Christmas lunch together. At McDonald's. We had to have a burger of *some* sort you know. The tradition is apparently still alive. My parents called this afternoon to let me know they had grilled burgers for lunch - and thought of all the fun we used to have doing that in the snow. It was good to know that the tradition is alive - even if I didn't get to take part.
Hope everyone had a good holiday - and hope your stocking was full (of something).
